Thought Work

Thoughts are Optional …

Thoughts are optional … even if they are “true”.

Did you know that your thoughts are optional, even if you when we tell ourselves a specific thought is “true”?

“I’m not good with money”   – a thought I have had in my head since I can remember.  Where did it come from?  I remember my Mom not being great with managing her money so I assumed I “inherited” that lack of money savvy from her.

But just because I thought “I’m not good with money because my Mom wasn’t good with money”, did it mean that it was actually true?

Here is what I learned – I was MAKING it true by repeating this belief in my head all the time.   And how do you think it made me feel when I said I wasn’t good with money?  I felt guilt, shame, a feeling of not being in control.

And how do you think I acted when I felt guilt, shame, irresponsible?  I WENT AND SPENT MY MONEY!   My actions were reinforcing my original negative thought.  I was proving my thought right, which of course made me feel like it was all the TRUTH.

But my Friend, if my negative thought was so powerful to control my feelings and my actions, then isn’t plausible that re-framing my thought to something that served me better could be just as powerful?!

YES IT CAN.

I turned “I’m not good with money” into “I’m really learning how to be good with money”.  Guilt and shame and irresponsibility turned into confidence, better decision making.   I turned spending money at the drive thru any chance I could, to buying groceries and eating at home.   I made this new thought my new truth.
